What is Freediving?
Freediving, or breath-hold diving, is a sport and practice that is as old as humanity. Embedded in our DNA is the same set of physiological responses to the underwater world that dolphins and whales rely on, known as the Mammalian Diving Reflex.
This "secondary" survival response is designed to maximize our oxygen consumption efficiency beneath the surface, and has several incredible effects which protect the lungs from drowning and the brain from oxygen deprivation. Through proper knowledge and specialized training, we can increase the strength of this reflex in order to become seemingly "superhuman" underwater.
In reality, our body is well designed to function as an aquatic marine mammal for short periods of time, we simply need to learn how to take advantage of it.

Why Freediving?
Freediving invites us to enter the ocean on its terms-quiet, aware, and fully present. It's not just about diving deep-it's about tuning into the mind-body connection, and understanding how our movements and energy shape every moment underwater. Experience the ocean not just as a visitor, but as a marine mammal-the way nature intended.
Freediving Is at the Core of What We Do
At Deep Water Hawaii, freediving isn't just a specialty - it's a foundation. Every member of our crew is a trained freediver, and that shared background shapes how we move, how we guide, and how we engage with wildlife.
Freediving teaches patiences, presence, and awareness of the body in space - skills that translate directly to the way we operate offshore. Whether we're scanning for life from the helm, or slipping quietly into the water, we approach the ocean with intention, fluidity, and control. That mindset is central to everything we do.
We offer certified freedivers the exhilarating chance to use their freedive skills to experience life changing animal encounters in Hawai'is offshore, blue water environment.

Freediving for a Lifetime
If you're not certified yet-or if you're looking to refine your skills-we recommend taking one of our
Deep Water Hawaii was founded by Dylan Currier, a certified Level 2 Freediving Instructor and Instructor Trainer with Freediving Instructors International (FII). Our courses are designed to provide high-quality, safety-focused freediving education on the Kona Coast-rooted in the same principles that guide our offshore work.
At Deep Water Hawaii, we teach FII-certified freediving courses designed to give you a strong foundation in safety, technique, and underwater efficiency that lasts for a lifetime. Whether you're brand new to the sport or seeking to build on existing experience, our courses emphasize practical application and long-term growth in the water. Our classes teach a comprehensive knowledge of physiology and physics, and instill efficient freediving practices that develop comfort and confidence on breath-hold dives.
We also offer private coaching for those looking for more personalized instruction. Whether it's working on bottom time, developing greater comfort at deeper depths, or improving specific skills-from water entry to equalization.
